A day at the beach ....... A safe one

A day at the beach ....... A safe one. Look for the warning flags.

A day at the beach ....... A safe one

North Peninsula State Park
Waves, undertows or rip currents and jellyfish are just a few of the potential problems you can encounter at the beach. Many Florida counties, including Volusia use a system of flags to warn us of any of these dangers. The flag color may have different meanings in different areas of Florida and many have questioned the meaning of the flags seen at lifeguard towers and other locations along Volusia County beaches.

Here is a quick explanation of the message each flag sends.

Volusia County Florida Beach warning flags

- Two red flags with a swimmer inside a circle with a line through it on one indicates the beach is closed.
Volusia County Florida Beach warning flags

- red flag is for high hazard, either high surf and/or strong currents.
- yellow flag is for medium hazard such as moderate surf and currents.
- green flag is a low hazard such as calm conditions.
- purple flag indicates dangerous marine life present.

Knowing the flag meanings may help you enjoy the beach.

Please note that if there are no flags that does not indicate safe conditions.

Visit the Volusia County beach safety web site for additional information: http://www.volusia.org/beach/default.htm
